Diesel engines are well known for their superior durability, often lasting 10 to 30 years. This means that there are still older vehicles that remain on the road today, and a fraction of these older vehicles are improperly maintained or maladjusted, causing them to emit excessive smoke and other pollutants.

Factors Contributing to Smoke

- Poor fuel quality

- Restricted air filter
- Clogged, worn or mismatched fuel injectors
- Improper injection timing
- Faulty fuel injection pump
- Defective or maladjusted puff limiter
- Low air box pressure
- Improperly adjusted valve lash or governor
- Malfunctioning turbocharger
- Malfunctioning aftercoolers
- Maladjusted fuel rack
- Defective air fuel controller
- Improper driving gear
- Air manifold leaks
